Kob Antelope Facts

Habitat and Requirements

  • The kob is a grazer of floodplain grasslands but avoids flooded areas and steep slopes.
  • Water dependent.

Social Structure

  • Kobs occur in small herds of between 5 - 15 female animals with the males spaced apart.
  • When the population density increases up to about 40 animals, they form a breeding arena called a 'lek'. Then hundreds of animals congregate in the area for mating opportunities.

Gestation Period

  • After a gestation period of around 8 months, one offspring is born.

Kob Antelope Gender Identification

  • Males darken with age, becoming a deep mahogany in the white-eared kob.
  • The "S"-shaped horns are found only in males, and bend sharply backwards, then curve up.

Kob Antelope Hunting Methods

  • Walk and stalk in the likely habitat.

A Good Kob Trophy

  • Horn length with thick bases will make a good trophy.
