George Leonard Herter (1911 - 1994) was the founder of the Herter's outdoor goods business and an author on many aspects of practical outdoor skills and other matters. His outdoor business which supplied hunting and fishing gear went bust in 1981 and Herter was forced to file for bankruptcy. "Among the cognoscenti, George Leonard Herter is treasured as one of the great American nutcases of all time, a man who never let nonsense like facts or objective sources tarnish the immaculate lunacy of his notions".
He was a fisherman and big game hunter, having hunted all over the world including Africa and South America. He had strong opinions on everything such as on elephant... 'In the tip of the nerve are always four or five baroque pearls and they should be taken out and saved. Elephant nerve is very tender and about the finest eating meat in the world.''If a wounded bear, lion, leopard, jaguar, or wolf attacks you and you fail to stop him with bullets your chances of survival are very small. The following is very hard to do and takes a great deal of courage but it works every time if you can do it. Spit into the animal's mouth. No matter how mad he is he will immediately stop and go away or stop long enough to give you a chance to get away.'
Berthe E Herter was George Herter's wife who co-authored some of his books.
Who was Jacques Pierre Herter though? This is a bit of a mystery...some say he was George & Berthe Herter's son, others say he was George's brother.
